Booking choice: The picnic wine tour. Check dates Tour details
Napa Valley has roughly 475 to 500 physical wineries and more than 1,000 wine brands (Napa Valley Vintners). Most are small, family-owned and appointment-only. For a first visit that's a lot of choice and a lot of rules.
Our shortlist mixes history, a view and value, and every walk-in or reservation note below comes from the winery's own site, checked in October 2026.
The quick answer
Start with Beringer (history and caves), Chateau Montelena (the Judgment of Paris white) and Sterling Vineyards (the gondola view), or swap in PEJU and Sutter Home for walk-in value. Plan two or three wineries a day, book the first tasting for 10 or 11 AM, and wear jeans and a layer.
Which Napa wineries are best for first-timers?
Beringer, Chateau Montelena, Sterling Vineyards, Schramsberg, Castello di Amorosa and Domaine Carneros each show a different side of Napa. PEJU, Sutter Home and V. Sattui are the easy walk-in choices.
Eleven wineries that suit a first visit, grouped by town from south to north. Booking rules come from each winery's own page; fees change by experience, so check before you go.
| Winery | Town | Walk-in or reservation |
|---|---|---|
| Domaine Carneros | Napa (Carneros) | Reservations required |
| PEJU | Rutherford | Walk-ins welcome, subject to availability |
| Grgich Hills | Rutherford | Frequently takes walk-ins |
| Inglenook | Rutherford | Reservations required |
| Sutter Home | St. Helena | Walk-in, no reservation needed |
| V. Sattui | St. Helena | Walk-ins welcome |
| Beringer | St. Helena | Reservations recommended; same-day may be available |
| Schramsberg | Calistoga | Appointment only |
| Castello di Amorosa | Calistoga | Reservation only |
| Sterling Vineyards | Calistoga | Reservations recommended, walk-ins welcome |
| Chateau Montelena | Calistoga | By appointment or walk-in |
If you only pick three, take Beringer for the 1880s Rhine House and hand-dug caves, Chateau Montelena for the story, and Sterling for the ride up. All three are in the north half of the valley, so they fit one day without backtracking.
Not sure where to start? On the picnic tour the guide picks three smaller family wineries and handles the bookings.
Check dates for the picnic wine tourWhat is the number one or most visited winery in Napa?
There's no official ranking or published visitor count. The names most first-timers ask for are Robert Mondavi, Beringer, Castello di Amorosa and Chateau Montelena.
Each has a claim worth knowing. Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay won the white wine flight at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, 50 years ago this year. Beringer has operated since 1876 and calls itself California's oldest continuously operating winery. Robert Mondavi Winery, the first major winery built in Napa after Prohibition, reopened on 20 April 2026 after a long renovation. Castello di Amorosa is a 107-room castle in 14th-century Tuscan style that took 15 years to build.
Famous isn't the same as best for you. Small estates often give the better hour, which is the logic of the picnic tour.

Can you walk in to Napa wineries without a reservation?
At some, yes. V. Sattui, PEJU, Sutter Home, Chateau Montelena and Sterling say they welcome walk-ins, and Madonna Estate and Ru Vango in Carneros are open without an appointment. Many others are appointment-only.
Appointment-only is the norm because of county permits and demand. Many wineries switched during the pandemic and most stuck with it. Schramsberg, Castello di Amorosa, Domaine Carneros and Inglenook require a booking; Domaine Carneros runs no waitlist.
Walk-in tips: arrive early in the day, go midweek, and have a backup in the same town. Beringer says same-day experiences may be available at its Welcome Center. Grgich Hills says it can frequently take walk-ins.
How many wineries can you visit in a day, and what time do Napa wineries close?
Two or three. Most tasting rooms open around 10 or 11 AM and close by 5 or 6 PM, so the last tasting usually starts around 3:30 or 4.
Visit Napa Valley advises 2 or 3 winery visits, but not more than that, since most experiences take at least 90 minutes. Official hours we checked:
- Chateau Montelena 9:30 AM to 4 PM.
- V. Sattui 9:30 AM to 6 PM.
- Beringer 10 AM to 5 PM.
- PEJU 11 AM to 5 PM.
- Sterling: last tasting 4:30 PM.
A reliable shape: tasting at 10:30, tasting at 1, lunch between, last one at 3:30. A fourth winery mostly means rushing the third.

Three wineries, lunch at one of them, and no driving: the open-air trolley leaves Oxbow Public Market at 10 AM.
Explore the wine trolley Tour detailsWhich Napa winery has the best view?
Sterling Vineyards, for the ride alone: an aerial gondola carries every tasting guest up to the winery on its knoll above Calistoga.
The gondola is running in 2026 after the 2020 Glass Fire closed the estate; it reopened in October 2023 with a new Doppelmayr system. Every tasting includes the round trip, there are no gondola-only rides, and it stops when the temperature tops 100 °F (Sterling Vineyards).
For a different kind of view, Castello di Amorosa is all architecture: eight levels, four of them underground, built to look medieval. Book ahead; it's reservation only.

What should you wear wine tasting in Napa? Can you wear jeans?
Yes, jeans are fine. Visit Napa Valley calls the style wine country casual. Bring a layer for the caves and wear shoes you can walk on gravel in.
The official tips say jeans work year-round and layers help, because caves and cellars stay cool. What not to wear:
- Strong perfume or cologne. It gets in the way of smelling the wine, yours and your neighbour's.
- Stilettos. Lawns, gravel paths and cave floors win.
- White, if you're nervous about spills.
For dinner, smart casual covers most of the valley's restaurants. The fine-dining rooms in Yountville and St. Helena set their own expectations, so check the restaurant's page before you go.
Jeans, a jacket and a guide who knows the small estates: the picnic tour handles the rest.
Check dates for the picnic wine tourHow do you plan a Napa wine tour?
Pick a base town, choose two or three wineries close together, book the appointment-only ones a week or two ahead, and settle who drives before you book anything.
- Choose an area, not a list. Calistoga and St. Helena in one day, Rutherford and Oakville in another. Napa to Calistoga takes 30 to 50 minutes.
- Mix one famous estate with one smaller winery. The contrast teaches you more than three big names.
- Book the 10 or 11 AM slot first. Then plan lunch, then one afternoon tasting.
- Bring ID. Tasting is 21+, and wineries such as Schramsberg and Chateau Montelena don't admit under-21s at all.
- Spit if you like. Using the dump bucket is normal (Visit Napa Valley).
Timing your visit? Our best time to visit guide covers seasons and crowds.

Should first-timers book a tour or drive themselves?
Book a tour unless someone in your group is happy not to drink. A guided day removes the driving question and the booking puzzle.
Three tours on this site start inside the valley. The picnic tour has a guide pick three smaller wineries and serves lunch at one. The wine trolley goes from downtown Napa to three wineries. The e-bike tour from Yountville books the appointments for you. On all three you pay the tastings at each winery (here's what that adds). Coming from the city? The private car lets you name the estates in the table above.

Our pick for a first day: three boutique wineries, a picnic lunch and pickup between Napa and Calistoga.
